North Side Swells, Nakalele, Maui, HI

Big Swell at NakaleleAnother trip down to the blowhole yielded some great results today. I woke up to news from my aunt that the storm was here. Family plans to do some snorkeling were immediately thrown out the window and replaced by something more exciting… 20 foot swells on the north side of the island. It only would have been better on Oahu but this was pretty good.

After collecting a ton of shot on my last trip with wide angles, I decided to shoot all tele. My setup was D800, 70-200mm f/2.8, tripod and my filter set (3-stop and 10-stop Hoya HMC neutral density filters). The one thing I forgot was a towel… And I definitely could have used one. After snapping this shot a swell slammed the wall protecting me. I looked up and to the right as I heard the crash and watched as a 15-foot wall of water sprayed up over the wall. Sure enough, my gear and I got soaked. As per usual, it was worth it. I packed it in and called it a day.
